| LELDF is in
a celebratory mood with two important victories under our belt. Thanks
to your concern and support, Officers Morningstar and Vander Mey have
both been acquitted! Jay Morningstar and his family had to endure the
pressure of an excruciating jury trial for three weeks. Happily, he
is now back on duty serving the people of Michigan.
Officer Vander Mey is now seeking reinstatement to the
Cook County P.D. through an administrative hearing. We are confident that
he will be successful.
Our newest case is that of Officer Raymond Bunn of the
Atlanta Police Department who faces serious charges. We are working hard
to see that he is vindicated at his trial.
Stephanie Mohr has been incarcerated for nearly three years.
Justice sometimes is slow to come, but we hope for her release – or
at least a drastic reduction in her sentence – after her long-awaited
new sentencing hearing is held.
In the case of Wyatt Henderson of Florida, the U.S Court
of Appeals recently ruled that his initial sentence was incorrect and
sent it back to the federal district court which reduced his sentence
from seven years to 27 months. We now plan to help him in his appeal of
the new sentence and in filing a motion for a new trial.
All of these cases drive home the fact that danger is ever
present in the life of a policeman. With every day comes news of another
officer killed in the line of duty. The recent senseless murder of a female
detective of the Fairfax County P.D. in Chantilly, Virginia, is just one
tragic example. Just as a soldier in a battle zone, our men and women
in blue have the constant pressure of not knowing when they may be called
upon to make a split second decision — one that could involve life
or death.
May God bless them and you for your generous support of
this worthy cause!
