ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Sept. 3, 2014) — The Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit organization that looks to raise and expend funds in support of law enforcement officers who make difficult decisions, including the use of force or the use of deadly force, while executing the mission of their organization. We recognize that such decisions are often made in an instant, in Shaun Cowley's case. We are an organization that is run by former ranking U.S. Department of Justice officials who understand the great pressures, risks, and challenges of our law enforcement professionals and we selectively undertake providing financial support to law enforcement officers who make difficult choices to protect other officers, the public, and/or themselves.

We reviewed the facts of Shaun's case very closely and found them compelling. We noted with dismay the the district attorney's office took 18 months to second-guess a decision that Shaun had to make in under two seconds.

LELDF maintains relationships with a variety of law enforcement groups and professional associations, including the Fraternal Order of Police, which brought Shaun's indictment to our attention. We also noted the interest of former U.S. District Court judge Paul Cassell and his subsequent decision to personally support Shaun's defense.

LELDF will soon appeal to our many donors and to private citizens to follow the case and help fund the defense efforts, which we believe will vindicate Shaun's actions in November 2012.
